Slang Word Search

This slang word search mixes a century of it: groovy and far out from the 1960s, gnarly, bogus and tubular from the surf and skate years, and newer words like rizz, sus and lowkey. Cool and okay have outlasted all of them.

Okay started as a joke. In March 1839 the Boston Morning Post printed o.k. for oll korrect, a deliberate misspelling of all correct, during a fad for comic abbreviations. Most of those died within months, and this one went around the world. Nerd has an exact birthday too. It first appeared in print in Dr Seuss's If I Ran the Zoo in 1950, as the name of an odd little creature.

Bucks for dollars goes back to colonial trade, when deerskins were a common unit of exchange on the frontier. Oxford's dictionaries pick a word of the year to track language like this, and two from this list have won: selfie in 2013, and rizz, short for charisma, in 2023.
