Writing Word Search

This writing word search follows a piece of writing from start to finish: brainstorm, outline, draft, revise, edit, proofread and publish, with the tools from the quill to the keyboard and the parts of an essay along the way.

The steps have a history. Donald Murray, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who taught at the University of New Hampshire, argued in a 1972 essay called Teach Writing as a Process Not Product that students should be judged on their drafts and revisions, not only on a finished paper. The idea spread through American schools in the 1980s, which is why so many classrooms hang a poster of the writing process.

The tools changed more slowly. Writers used goose feather quills for over a thousand years, until cheap steel nibs took over in the 1800s. Christopher Latham Sholes patented a typewriter in 1868, and the QWERTY layout he worked out for it is still on every keyboard. Deadline is darker than it sounds: at the Civil War prison at Andersonville, it was a line inside the stockade that no prisoner could cross and live.
