The league began in 1920 in Canton, Ohio, as the American Professional Football Association and took the name National Football League two years later. The Green Bay Packers joined in 1921 and are named after the Indian Packing Company, which paid for their first jerseys. They are still owned by their fans, the only community-owned team in the league.
Many names point to history. The 49ers are named after the gold rush prospectors of 1849, the Browns after their first coach, Paul Brown, and the Baltimore Ravens after the poem by Edgar Allan Poe, who is buried in that city. The Houston Texans joined in 2002 as the 32nd team, and the league has played in eight divisions of four ever since.
