The league started in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America and became the NBA in 1949, when it merged with the older National Basketball League. Several teams kept names that no longer fit their cities. The Lakers came from Minneapolis, in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and moved to Los Angeles in 1960. The Jazz began in New Orleans, the home of jazz, and moved to Utah in 1979.
The Knicks are named for the Knickerbockers, the rolled-up trousers of the Dutch settlers of old New York. The Toronto Raptors joined in 1995 with a name picked by a fan vote, in the years of the Jurassic Park films, and are the only team outside the United States. The Oklahoma City Thunder arrived in 2008, when the Seattle SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma.
