NFL Word Search
The NFL as a league rather than a list of teams: the draft and the combine, the playoffs and the Super Bowl, the AFC and the NFC, the commissioner, the salary cap and the free agent market, plus the jobs on the field from quarterback to punter.
The league was founded in 1920 in Canton, Ohio, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in the same city in 1963. Its two conferences come from the 1970 merger with the American Football League: the old AFL clubs became the core of the AFC, the older NFL clubs the NFC, and the Super Bowl has been the AFC champion against the NFC champion ever since. Each conference holds sixteen teams in four divisions, and since 2020 seven from each side reach the playoffs, with only the top seed earning a week off.
The draft began in 1936 so that the worst team could pick first, and the first player ever chosen, Jay Berwanger, never played a down of professional football. The salary cap arrived in 1994 and gives every club the same spending limit, which is why the free agent market opens each March with so much movement. The Detroit Lions have hosted a game on Thanksgiving Day since 1934, the Dallas Cowboys since 1966.
