This Easter Bunny word search holds forty words from the egg-hiding rabbit and the real animals behind him: the hare and her leveret, the nest, Peter Cottontail on the bunny trail, the twitching whiskers, the carrot left out for him and the footprints he leaves behind.
The bunny began as a hare. German Lutherans told of the Osterhase, the Easter hare, who judged whether children had been good and brought colored eggs to the ones who had; a doctor named Georg Franck von Franckenau described the custom in 1682. German families who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s brought the Osterhase with them, and their children built nests out of caps and bonnets for him to fill, the start of the Easter basket.
The nest makes sense for a hare. Rabbits give birth underground in a burrow to babies, called kits, that are blind and hairless, while a hare has her leverets in a shallow hollow in the grass, already furred and with their eyes open. The song Here Comes Peter Cottontail, written in 1949 and recorded by Gene Autry, put the bunny on his trail, and most chocolate bunnies are made hollow, since a solid one the same size would be heavy and costly.
