This Palm Sunday word search holds forty words from the Sunday before Easter: the palms and fronds, the shout of hosanna, the donkey and the colt, the cloaks spread on the road, the crowd and the city of Jerusalem.
Palm Sunday opens Holy Week. It remembers the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a young donkey while crowds laid their cloaks and cut branches on the road ahead of him, a scene told in all four Gospels. Only John says the branches came from palm trees. Hosanna began as a Hebrew plea, save us, we pray, and became a shout of praise. Matthew links the ride to a line in the book of Zechariah about a king who comes humble and riding on a donkey, an animal of peace rather than a war horse.
Many churches start the service outside with a procession, and in Jerusalem itself pilgrims walk from Bethphage on the Mount of Olives down into the old city. People take their palm fronds home and weave them into small crosses, and the next year the dried palms are burned to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday. Where palms do not grow, other branches take their place: pussy willow in Russia and much of eastern Europe, and yew, box or olive in other countries.
