Long before candy, the Easter basket held breakfast. In Poland families still carry a basket to church on Holy Saturday for the blessing called Swieconka, lined with a white cloth and filled with colored eggs, bread, salt, sausage, horseradish and a small lamb made of sugar or butter. The food is blessed that day and eaten on Easter morning, when the fast of Lent is over.
Wicker is a way of weaving, not a material: wicker baskets are woven from willow, rattan, cane or reed. Robin eggs are malted milk balls coated in speckled blue candy to look like the eggs of the American robin, which are blue because the mother's body adds a pigment to the shell as it forms. Licorice gets its flavor from the root of a plant in the pea family, and the sweet compound in that root is many times sweeter than sugar.
