A landmark was once a literal thing: a stone, a tree or a post set to mark where one holding of land ended and the next began, and moving one was a serious offense in early English law. The sense of a conspicuous building you navigate by came later, and the figurative sense, a landmark ruling or a landmark birthday, later still.
Mausoleum is a man's name. Mausolus ruled Caria in the fourth century BC, and the tomb his widow built for him at Halicarnassus was so large and so ornamented that it was counted among the seven wonders and its name became the general word for any grand tomb. The building itself was brought down by earthquakes and its stone reused in a crusader castle, which still stands.
