Italy Word Search
This Italy word search holds forty words from the boot-shaped country: Rome, Venice and Florence, the Colosseum and the Pantheon, the gondola, Leonardo and Michelangelo, Dante, and the volcano Vesuvius.
Legend says Rome was founded in 753 BC by the twins Romulus and Remus, raised by a wolf on the banks of the Tiber. Italy itself is much younger as a country. It was a patchwork of kingdoms and city states until 1861, and Rome became the capital only in 1871. Two other countries still sit entirely inside its borders: Vatican City, in the middle of Rome, and San Marino, in the hills near the Adriatic.
Venice is built on more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon, joined by bridges over its canals. The Leaning Tower of Pisa started to tilt during construction in the 1170s because the ground under one side was too soft, and work stopped for nearly a century. Standard Italian grew from the Tuscan speech of Florence, largely because Dante wrote his Divine Comedy in it rather than in Latin in the early 1300s.
