Holes Word Search
This Holes puzzle holds forty words from Camp Green Lake: Stanley, Zero, Squid, Armpit, Magnet, Zigzag, the Warden, Mr Sir, the outlaw Kate Barlow and the yellow-spotted lizards that hide in the holes.
Louis Sachar published Holes in 1998, and it won the National Book Award that year and the Newbery Medal in 1999. Its hero is Stanley Yelnats IV, whose last name is his first name spelled backward, sent to a camp in the Texas desert for stealing a pair of sneakers he never stole. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake, only dry dirt, and every boy digs one hole a day, five feet deep and five feet across, using his shovel to measure.
The book runs three stories side by side. In Latvia, Elya Yelnats breaks a promise to Madame Zeroni and brings a curse on his family. At Green Lake more than a hundred years earlier, Sam the onion seller is killed for loving the schoolteacher Katherine Barlow, who turns outlaw and buries her loot. The threads meet when Stanley and Zero climb a mountain shaped like a thumb and live on wild onions and the jars of spiced peaches she left behind.
