Hatchet Word Search
This Hatchet puzzle holds forty words from Brian Robeson's fifty-four days in the Canadian woods: the hatchet, the Cessna that goes down, the lake, his shelter, the first fire, foolbirds, gut cherries, the moose, the porcupine and the transmitter that brings rescue.
Gary Paulsen published Hatchet in 1987, and it was named a Newbery Honor book the next year. Brian is thirteen, flying in a bush plane to see his father in the Canadian oil fields, when the pilot has a heart attack. Brian brings the plane down in a lake and swims out with the clothes he has on and the hatchet his mother gave him. He also carries the Secret: he saw his mother with another man, the reason for his parents' divorce.
Paulsen drew on his own life. He spent much of his boyhood in the Minnesota woods hunting and trapping, and he twice ran the Iditarod sled dog race across Alaska. Brian's first fire comes by accident, when the hatchet strikes the rock wall of his shelter and throws sparks, which he learns to catch in shredded birch bark. Foolbirds are ruffed grouse, too tame to fly off, and gut cherries are the chokecherries that make him sick.
