Two fabrics on this list are named after places, and one of them by accident. Denim is serge de Nimes, a sturdy twill from the French city, and jeans takes its name from Genoa, where the sailors wore it. Tweed should have been tweel, the Scots form of twill, but a London merchant in the 1830s misread the word on an invoice as the River Tweed, liked the sound of it, and sold it under the wrong name until the wrong name won.

Nylon is the one with a birthday. DuPont announced it in 1938 as the first fully synthetic fiber, made from coal, air and water, and the stockings sold four million pairs in four days. Production was turned over to parachutes and tyre cord within three years, and the word has been a generic term for the material ever since.
