Theater comes from the Greek theatron, a seeing place. In ancient Athens plays were part of a festival for the god Dionysus, and tradition says a performer named Thespis was the first to step out of the chorus and speak as a character, around 534 BC, which is why actors are still called thespians. The masks of comedy and tragedy come from those Greek plays, where a few actors switched masks to play many parts.

Shakespeare's company built the Globe on the south bank of the Thames in 1599. In 1613 a cannon fired during a performance of Henry VIII set the thatched roof alight and the theater burned to the ground; nobody died, though one man's breeches caught fire and were put out with ale. A matinee takes its name from the French matin, morning, though most matinees start in the afternoon. The proscenium is the arch that frames a stage like a picture, and the wings are the hidden spaces at either side where actors wait for their cue.
