This elements of art word search holds the seven elements every art class starts with, line, shape, form, space, color, value and texture, plus the words that describe them, from tint and shade to contour and gradient.
Shape and form are easy to mix up. A shape is flat, with height and width only, like a circle or a square drawn on paper; a form has depth as well, like a sphere, a cube or a cylinder. Value is how light or dark something is. Add white to a hue and you get a tint, add black and you get a shade, add gray and you get a tone. Warm colors such as red and orange seem to come forward on the page, while cool blues and greens seem to sit back.
Isaac Newton bent the band of colors from a prism into a circle in his 1704 book Opticks, an early version of the color wheel painters still use. Positive space is the subject and negative space is the area around it; the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin made the idea famous in 1915 with a drawing that reads as a vase or as two faces, depending on which space you look at. Texture can be actual, something you feel with your fingers, or implied, drawn so it only looks rough.
