This Because of Winn-Dixie puzzle holds forty words from Kate DiCamillo's novel: Opal, her father the preacher, the town of Naomi, Florida, the dog Winn Dixie, Gloria Dump, Miss Franny, Otis, the Littmus Lozenge and the bottle tree.
DiCamillo wrote the book during a cold Minnesota winter, homesick for Florida and living in an apartment where she could not keep a dog. It came out in 2000, her first novel, and was named a Newbery Honor book the next year. Ten-year-old India Opal Buloni finds the dog causing trouble in the produce section of a Winn-Dixie supermarket and claims him on the spot, naming him after the store.
Opal asks her father for ten things about the mother who left when she was three, and the people of Naomi slowly fill the rest of her summer. Gloria Dump, who can barely see, hangs bottles on a tree for the things she did wrong. Miss Franny tells how a bear once walked into her library, and how her great-grandfather Littmus Block made a candy after the Civil War that tastes sweet and sad at once. Winn-Dixie smiles with all his teeth and is terrified of thunderstorms.
