Earth Day falls on April 22 every year, and it started in 1970 when twenty million Americans turned out to protest oil spills, smog and rivers so polluted they caught fire. It is now marked in nearly 200 countries, usually by doing something small and local: a beach cleanup, a tree planting, a switch to a refillable bottle.

The words in this puzzle are the vocabulary that goes with that work - habitat, conservation, pollution, oxygen, oceans. They are the terms a class is usually learning the same week the day comes around, which makes this an easy warm-up before a lesson on recycling or on where the trash actually goes.

The date was chosen for a dull, practical reason: late April falls between spring break and final exams, so students were free to turn out. That is also why it still lands squarely in the school calendar, and why most classrooms mark it.
