A trait is not a feeling. Feeling grumpy for an afternoon is an emotion; being grumpy most mornings for years is a trait. That is the difference reading teachers press on when a class describes a character. A student who calls Scrooge selfish has to point to the text, such as his refusal to give to the men collecting for the poor, and then notice that by the last chapter the trait has turned to generous.
The word character comes from the Greek for a stamp or an engraved mark, the impression a person leaves. Around 319 BC Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle, wrote a short book called Characters, thirty sketches of types such as the flatterer, the chatterer and the coward. In 1688 the French writer Jean de La Bruyere translated it and added portraits of his own.
