Australia Word Search
This Australia word search holds forty words from the country that is also a continent: Sydney, Canberra and Tasmania, Uluru and the outback, the kangaroo, koala and platypus, the boomerang and the didgeridoo.
Canberra exists because Sydney and Melbourne could not agree which of them should be the capital. A new city was planned between the two instead, designed by the American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, and Parliament moved there in 1927. Aboriginal Australians have lived on the continent for more than 50,000 years, and Uluru, the great red rock near its center, is sacred to the Anangu people, at whose request climbing it was banned in 2019.
The platypus and the echidna are the only living mammals that lay eggs. The platypus puzzled British scientists so badly in 1799 that some thought the first specimen was a fake, a duck's bill sewn onto the body of another animal. Off the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef runs for more than 2,300 kilometers, the largest coral reef system in the world, and Australia mines most of the world's precious opal.
