Children learn the outside of the body first - head, shoulders, knees and toes, as the song goes - and those words come out short and plain: arm, leg, hip, lip, chin. The inside parts, bone, brain, lung, muscle and spine, usually arrive later, with a first science lesson.
A few of the spellings are older than they look. The k in knee and the w in wrist were both spoken in Old English. Thumb went the other way: it had no b at all until one was added around 1300, and nobody has ever said it. Tooth and foot keep the oldest kind of English plural, made by changing the vowel: teeth, feet.
