Languages add color words in a surprisingly fixed order - black and white first, then red, then green and yellow, then blue. Blue is one of the last to arrive almost everywhere, which is why ancient writers describe the sea by how it moves rather than by its color.

Several are named after the thing they came from. Orange is the fruit: before oranges reached England the color had no name of its own, and Old English called it yellow-red. Lime, lemon, peach, cherry and olive are fruit as well, and indigo is a dye plant whose name means from India.
