Kindergarten math starts by sorting the two kinds. Flat shapes have sides and corners - a triangle three of each, a square four. Solid shapes have faces and edges, and a child learns them by the things they look like: a ball is a sphere, a can is a cylinder, an ice cream cone is a cone.
Most of the many-sided names are Greek counting words with -gon, from the Greek for angle, on the end: pentagon is five, hexagon six, octagon eight. The Pentagon building near Washington is named for its shape, and every stop sign in the United States is an octagon.
