Fall Word Search
Forty words for the season itself: maple and oak leaves turning golden and russet, a scarecrow by the corn maze, a cup of cider, and the first morning cold enough for a sweater.
Fall and autumn are the same season in the same language, and both words are on this list. "Fall of the leaf" was ordinary usage in England through the 1500s and 1600s, shortened in speech to fall, and it crossed the Atlantic with the colonists. Britain then drifted toward autumn, a French borrowing, and left fall behind; America kept both.
The colors were in the leaves all summer. As the days shorten, trees stop making green chlorophyll, and the yellow and orange underneath show through. The reds are new: a maple makes them in autumn from sugar trapped in the leaf, which is why the brightest falls follow sunny days and cool nights.
