This puzzle holds forty words for the walking dead: the horde and the outbreak, brains and the barricade, the survivor in the shelter, the search for a cure, the dance from Thriller, and two real zombie makers from nature, the cordyceps fungus and the jewel wasp.
The word comes from zonbi in Haitian Creole, from folklore about the dead raised to work as laborers. George Romero's Night of the Living Dead in 1968 made the slow, hungry crowd a film monster, though nobody in it says zombie; the characters call them ghouls. His Dawn of the Dead in 1978 trapped its survivors in a shopping mall near Pittsburgh, and in 1983 the video for Michael Jackson's Thriller turned a graveyard of the dead into dancers.
Nature has zombies of its own. A fungus in tropical forests infects carpenter ants, steers them up a plant and has them clamp onto the underside of a leaf before it kills them and grows a stalk from the head that rains spores on the ants below. That fungus is the model for the monsters in The Last of Us. The emerald jewel wasp stings a cockroach in the brain and then leads it to its burrow by one antenna, like a dog on a leash.
