Skeletons Word Search

Forty words for the bones of Halloween and the bones inside you: the skull and the femur, the spine and the rib cage, the jawbone and the kneecap, the calavera and Catrina of the Day of the Dead, the pirates' Jolly Roger, and Jack Skellington of Halloween Town.

An adult skeleton has 206 bones, but a newborn has about 300; many of them fuse as a child grows, the plates of the skull among them. More than half of the total is in the hands and feet, 27 bones in each hand and 26 in each foot. The femur in the thigh is the longest and strongest bone, and the smallest is the stirrup deep in the middle ear, about three millimeters long.

Bone is living tissue. The red marrow inside it makes millions of blood cells every second, and the hard outer layer stores most of the body's calcium. The plastic skeletons of Halloween borrow from an older tradition: the Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada drew skeletons in fine clothes around 1910, and his elegant lady, La Calavera Catrina, became the face of the Day of the Dead. Under Paris, the catacombs hold the bones of about six million people, moved there from overflowing city cemeteries starting in the 1780s.
