This puzzle holds forty words about bats: echolocation and sonar, the roost in a cave or under a bridge, the colony and its guano, moths and nectar on the menu, and the bats themselves, from the flying fox to the vampire bat.
Bats are the only mammals that truly fly, and with more than 1,400 species they make up about a fifth of all mammals. Their order is Chiroptera, Greek for hand wing: the wing is a hand, with a thin membrane of skin stretched across four long finger bones, and the short thumb is left free for climbing. Most small bats find insects in the dark by calling at pitches too high for people to hear and listening for the echoes.
On summer evenings about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats pour out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas, the largest city bat colony in North America. Only three species drink blood, all in the Americas, and mostly from cattle and birds. Fruit bats spread seeds across tropical forests, and the long-nosed bats of Mexico pollinate the agave plants that tequila is made from.
