Monsters Word Search
Forty monsters from myth, folklore, film and picture books fill this puzzle: the Kraken and the Cyclops, the Minotaur and Medusa, Bigfoot, Mothman and the Jersey Devil, Godzilla, the Gruffalo, and the claws and tentacles they come with.
The word comes from the Latin monstrum, a sign or warning sent by the gods, from the same root as monere, to warn. The Greeks filled their myths with them: Odysseus blinded the Cyclops Polyphemus to escape his cave, and Theseus killed the Minotaur in the labyrinth on Crete. In Beowulf, the Old English poem, the hero tears the arm off Grendel in a mead hall.
Some monsters are newer than they look. The famous 1934 photo of Nessie in Loch Ness was revealed in 1994 as a toy submarine with a sculpted head. The Mothman sightings came from Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1966 and 1967, and the chupacabra was first reported in Puerto Rico in 1995. The Jersey Devil of the Pine Barrens gave its name to the state's hockey team in 1982, and Godzilla first rose from the sea off Japan in a Toho film of 1954.
