Age of Exploration Word Search
This Age of Exploration word search holds forty words from the great voyages of the 1400s and 1500s: Columbus, Magellan and Vasco da Gama, the caravel and the astrolabe, and the pepper and cloves that sent them to sea.
The race was about spices. Pepper, cloves and nutmeg came from India and the islands of Southeast Asia, and by the time they passed through Ottoman lands and Venice to reach Europe, the price had multiplied. Portugal went around Africa: Prince Henry paid for voyages down the coast, Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, and Vasco da Gama reached India in 1498. Spain bet on sailing west, and Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492.
In 1494 the Treaty of Tordesillas split the newly found lands between Spain and Portugal along a line in the Atlantic, which is why Brazil speaks Portuguese. Magellan set out from Spain in 1519 with five ships and about 270 men. On the Pacific crossing his men ate leather and sawdust, and many died of scurvy, caused by a lack of vitamin C. Magellan was killed in the Philippines, and in 1522 one ship, the Victoria, came home with 18 men, the first crew to circumnavigate the globe.
