This Middle Ages word search holds forty words from medieval Europe: the castle and its moat, the knight with his squire, the lord and the serf who farmed his manor, and the Black Death of 1347.
The Middle Ages run roughly from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 to about 1500, and land was the wealth of the age. Under feudalism a king granted a fief to a noble, who swore loyalty as his vassal and owed him knights in wartime. The noble's land was worked by serfs, who could not leave it without permission. A boy training for knighthood started as a page at about seven, became a squire in his teens and could be knighted around twenty-one.
In 1215 English barons forced King John to seal Magna Carta at Runnymede, the first time a king of England accepted in writing that the law applied to him too. In 1086 William the Conqueror had every estate in England surveyed for the Domesday Book, down to the plows and the pigs. The Black Death reached Europe in 1347 and in about four years killed roughly a third of its people.
