Scientific Revolution Word Search
This Scientific Revolution word search holds forty words from the years that changed how people study nature: Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton, the telescope and the microscope, and the experiment as the test of an idea.
It is usually dated from 1543, when Copernicus published his heliocentric model, with the earth and planets circling the sun, and Andreas Vesalius published a book of human anatomy drawn from real dissections. In 1609 Kepler showed that planets travel in an ellipse, not a circle. That same winter Galileo turned a telescope on the sky and saw four moons going around Jupiter, proof that not everything circled the earth.
In 1665 Robert Hooke looked at a slice of cork through a microscope and named the little boxes he saw cells, after the small rooms of monks. The Royal Society, founded in London in 1660, took as its motto Nullius in verba, take nobody's word for it. In 1687 Isaac Newton's Principia set out three laws of motion and one law of gravity that worked for a falling apple and for the moon alike.
