Turtles have been around for more than 200 million years, and the shell is part of the skeleton. The top half, the carapace, is fused to the ribs and backbone, so a turtle can never crawl out of it. The Galapagos Islands take their name from an old Spanish word for the giant tortoises found there. A tortoise lives on land, while a terrapin lives in fresh or brackish water, such as the salt marshes along the coast.
In many turtles the warmth of the nest decides whether eggs hatch as males or females; in sea turtles a hot nest turns out mostly females. A female sea turtle comes back to nest on the same stretch of beach where she hatched, often decades later. The hatchlings dig out at night and head for the brightest horizon, which should be the moonlit sea. The leatherback, the largest, has no hard shell at all and lives mostly on jellyfish.
