A calico is almost always a female, because the genes for orange and black fur ride on the X chromosome and a cat needs two X chromosomes to show both. A mother cat is called a queen and a male a tom. The rough feel of a cat's tongue comes from hundreds of tiny backward-facing hooks that comb out loose fur, which is where a hairball comes from. Cats cannot taste sweetness at all.
