Mario is older than his own series. He first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981 as Jumpman, a carpenter climbing girders to rescue a woman from the ape, and two years later Mario Bros. made him a plumber and gave him a brother. His name is usually said to come from Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America's first warehouse.
Super Mario Bros., released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, set the pattern the series still follows: run to the right, stomp on enemies, knock the coin out of every block and reach the flagpole at the end of each level. Its composer, Koji Kondo, shaped the overworld theme around the feel of Mario running and jumping.
