Sonic was designed as an argument about hardware. Sega needed something that only its console could do, and the answer was speed, so the character was built to be moved fast and drawn fast: a blue that matched the company logo, a simple silhouette that reads at any velocity, and red shoes taken from Michael Jackson's boots crossed with Santa Claus.

The villain has two names because two offices disagreed. Japan called him Dr Eggman, the American branch renamed him Dr Robotnik for the 1991 release, and both names stayed in print for a decade until the series settled on Eggman with Robotnik as a formal alternative. The Chao Garden, several entries down the list, is the other oddity: a virtual pet sub-game buried inside a racing platformer, and for a lot of players the reason they kept the disc.
