Fortnite came out in 2017 as a game about building forts against zombies, and the free battle royale mode Epic Games added a few months later is the one that took over. Its seasons end in live events: in October 2019 a black hole swallowed the whole island, and for almost two days there was nothing to play, only a screen of swirling light.
The game doubles as a stage. In April 2020 a concert inside Fortnite drew more than twelve million players at once, and Zero Build, a mode with no building at all, arrived in 2022 for players who would rather just play.
