Skateboarding Word Search
Forty skateboarding words, from the parts to the tricks: the deck, the trucks and the wheels, the grip tape on top, the ollie and the kickflip, a grind along a ledge, the half pipe and the bowl at the skate park, and Tony Hawk, the best-known skater alive.
Skateboarding started in California in the 1950s, when surfers nailed roller-skate wheels to short boards and called it sidewalk surfing. The wheels were clay or steel and slid out on every pebble until 1972, when Frank Nasworthy began selling wheels of polyurethane, a soft plastic that gripped the pavement. During the drought of 1976 and 1977 the Dogtown skaters of Santa Monica and Venice rode the curved walls of empty swimming pools, and the pool became the first ramp.
The ollie, the jump that starts almost every trick, was invented by Alan Gelfand, nicknamed Ollie, in Florida in 1978; Rodney Mullen worked out how to do it on flat ground and then invented the kickflip and most of the flip tricks that followed. Tony Hawk landed the first 900, two and a half spins in the air, at the 1999 X Games. Skateboarding became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games held in 2021, with a street event and a park event.
