The Appalachian Trail runs about 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine. Benton MacKaye proposed it in 1921, volunteers finished the path in 1937, and it is marked the whole way by white blazes, each two inches wide and six inches tall. A thru hike of the whole trail takes most people five to seven months, and only about one in four who start it finish.
A switchback is a zigzag cut into a slope so the grade stays gentle; cutting straight across the bends saves a few steps and starts a gully that the next rain widens, which is why trail crews ask hikers to stay on the path. Above the tree line, where there are no trees to paint, a cairn, a stack of rocks, marks the route. The John Muir Trail, 211 miles through the Sierra Nevada, is named for the Scottish-born naturalist who first walked those mountains in 1868 and pushed Congress to make Yosemite a national park.
