Scouting Word Search
Forty scouting words, from the troop and its patrol to the jamboree: the uniform and the merit badge, the knots and the campfire, the oath and the motto, Baden Powell, who started it all, the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts with their cookies.
Robert Baden-Powell, a British army officer, took twenty boys to Brownsea Island off the Dorset coast in August 1907 for the first scout camp, and his book Scouting for Boys came out the next year. The motto Be Prepared shares his initials. In the United States the Boy Scouts were chartered in 1910, and Juliette Low founded the Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, with eighteen girls.
Girl Scout cookies began in 1917, when a troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked and sold them to pay for its own projects; the Thin Mint has been the best seller for decades. The Pinewood Derby was invented in 1953 by Don Murphy, a Cub Scout leader in Manhattan Beach, California, whose son was too young for the soap box derby. An Eagle Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, and the Webelos rank takes its name from the words We'll Be Loyal Scouts.
