The English longbow was cut from yew, with the pale sapwood on the outside of the bend and the darker heartwood inside, and it decided the battle of Agincourt in 1415. When the Tudor warship Mary Rose was raised from the seabed in 1982, it still held more than a hundred longbows and thousands of arrows, the best evidence of what those bows were like.
Olympic archers shoot a recurve bow at a target 70 meters away. The face is 122 centimeters across and divided into ten rings; the two inner gold rings score 10 and 9. The compound bow, with pulleys at the tips that take most of the weight off the archer's fingers at full draw, was invented by Holless Wilbur Allen of Missouri in 1966. Fletching, three feathers or plastic vanes at the back of the shaft, makes the arrow spin so it flies straight, and a person who loves the sport is a toxophilite, from the Greek words for bow and loving.
