Rock Climbing Word Search
Forty rock climbing words, from the gear to the rock: the harness and the rope, the carabiner that clips them together, the belay that holds a fall, the chalk on your hands, the anchor at the top of a pitch, the crux where the route is hardest, and El Capitan, the wall every climber knows.
El Capitan is a granite face about 3,000 feet high in Yosemite Valley. Warren Harding and two partners made the first ascent of its Nose route in 1958, working in stages over eighteen months with pitons hammered into the cracks. In June 2017 Alex Honnold climbed the Freerider route alone and without a rope in just under four hours, the first free solo of the wall, filmed for the documentary Free Solo.
Bouldering needs no rope at all: the climbs are short, a crash pad lies under them, and a spotter guides a falling climber onto the pad. The hardest move on a route is its crux, and the advice another climber gives you about it is called beta, after the Betamax videotapes climbers once traded. Chalk is magnesium carbonate, the same powder gymnasts use to dry their hands, and the figure eight is the knot that ties the rope to the harness.
