This Shrek puzzle holds forty names from the swamp and beyond: Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad, the Dragon, Puss in Boots, Gingy, the kingdom of Far Far Away, and the vegetable an ogre uses to explain himself, the onion.
The film began as a picture book. William Steig, a cartoonist for The New Yorker, published Shrek! in 1990, when he was in his eighties; the name comes from the Yiddish shrek, meaning fear or fright. DreamWorks released the film in 2001, and it won the first Oscar ever given for Best Animated Feature. Mike Myers voices Shrek, Eddie Murphy is Donkey and Cameron Diaz is Fiona.
Myers recorded his whole part in his own voice, then asked to record it again in a Scottish accent. Duloc, Farquaad's kingdom, is a joke on a theme park, with turnstiles and a singing welcome booth, and the film is full of fairy tale guests: the Gingerbread Man, Pinocchio, the Three Blind Mice, the Big Bad Wolf in Grandma's nightgown, and the Magic Mirror. Puss in Boots joined in Shrek 2 in 2004, voiced by Antonio Banderas.
