Movies Word Search

This movies puzzle holds forty words from the screen and the seats in front of it: the actor and the director, the screenplay, the trailer and the premiere, the popcorn, the Oscar and the clapperboard that starts every take.

The first paying movie audience sat down in Paris on December 28, 1895, when Auguste and Louis Lumiere showed ten short films in a basement room of the Grand Cafe. Films stayed silent for about thirty years, with a piano or an organ playing in the theater, until The Jazz Singer in 1927 let audiences hear Al Jolson speak. The Academy handed out its first Oscars in 1929, and the best picture was Wings, a silent war film.

Some of the words are older than film. Matinee comes from the French matin, morning, though matinees run in the afternoon. Blockbuster was first a name for World War II bombs big enough to flatten a city block, and Jaws in 1975 is the film usually called the first summer blockbuster. The clapperboard has a plain job: the snap of its hinged stick gives the editor one sharp sound to line up with one frame of picture.
