Great Gatsby Word Search
This Great Gatsby word search holds forty words from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel: Gatsby, Daisy, Carraway, Jordan Baker, Myrtle, West Egg, the green light at the end of the dock, and the Eckleburg billboard.
The book came out in April 1925 and is set in the summer of 1922. West Egg and East Egg stand for two real peninsulas on the north shore of Long Island, Great Neck and Manhasset Neck. Gatsby was born James Gatz in North Dakota, and the money behind his parties comes from bootlegging, liquor sold illegally under Prohibition with the help of men like Meyer Wolfsheim, who is said to have fixed the 1919 World Series.
Between the Eggs and Manhattan lies the valley of ashes, modeled on real coal-ash dumps in Queens, where the huge painted eyes of an eye doctor's sign look down on Wilson's garage. The novel sold poorly, and Fitzgerald died in 1940 believing it a failure. During World War II about 150,000 free copies went out to American soldiers, and after the war it found its place in high school classrooms.
