The novel is the newest form on the list and the word says so. It comes from the Italian novella, a new thing or a piece of news, and for a long time it was a slightly disreputable label for prose stories that were neither history nor poetry. Epic and fable are thousands of years older and were both spoken before they were ever written down.
Two of the names here mark the moment a language grew up. Dante wrote the Commedia in Tuscan rather than Latin at a time when serious work was expected to be in Latin, and modern Italian is substantially the dialect he used. Homer is the opposite case: nobody is certain he existed as one person, and the poems were composed and carried orally for generations before anyone wrote them out.
