Lord of the Flies Word Search
This Lord of the Flies word search holds forty words from William Golding's novel: Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Simon, Roger, the conch, Piggy's glasses, the signal fire, the beast and Castle Rock.
Golding taught at a boys' school and had served in the Royal Navy in World War II, and the book came out in 1954. He wrote it as an answer to The Coral Island, an 1857 adventure in which three shipwrecked British boys behave splendidly; he even kept the names Ralph and Jack. The title is a translation of Beelzebub, a Hebrew name for a devil, and in the novel it belongs to a pig's head left on a stick in the forest.
The conch, a large shell that Ralph and Piggy find in the lagoon, decides who may speak at an assembly. Piggy's glasses light the first fire, and Jack's hunters let the signal fire go out on the day a ship passes. Simon is killed in a frenzied dance, and Roger sends a boulder down from Castle Rock that kills Piggy and smashes the conch. In the end the island burns, set alight to hunt Ralph down, and the smoke brings a naval officer ashore.
