Scarecrows Word Search
This scarecrows word search holds forty words for the figure that guards the garden: straw stuffed into old overalls, a burlap sack for a head, a flannel shirt and a hat, and the crows and starlings it is meant to scare away.
Before scarecrows, many farms used children. In medieval Britain, boys and girls worked as a bird scarer, walking the fields with wooden clappers or stones to keep birds off the newly sown seeds. In Japan a scarecrow is called a kakashi, and the Kojiki, a book of myths written down in 712, names a scarecrow god, Kuebiko, who cannot walk but knows everything under heaven.
The best-known scarecrow wants a brain. In L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900, Dorothy finds him on a pole in a cornfield, and he joins her on the road with the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Ray Bolger played him in the 1939 film, dancing on legs that seemed to fold like straw.
