This leaves word search holds forty words for the leaf and the trees that drop it: the blade, vein and petiole, birch, aspen, ginkgo and sumac, the crimson and amber of autumn, and the leaf blower that clears them away.
A leaf is a food factory. Tiny pores called stomata on its underside let in carbon dioxide, the veins bring water up from the roots, and in photosynthesis the leaf uses sunlight to turn the two into sugar. The petiole is the stalk that joins the leaf to the twig. In the fall a deciduous tree grows a layer of cork-like cells across the base of each petiole, sealing it off, and the leaf lets go.
Some trees break the rules. A sassafras grows three leaf shapes on the same branch: a plain oval, a mitten and a leaf with three lobes. The fan-shaped leaves of the ginkgo, a tree that has barely changed in 200 million years, turn yellow and often drop in a single day. And a stand of quaking aspen can be one plant: Pando, in Utah, is a single root system with about 47,000 trunks, and its leaves turn gold together.
