Rainy Day Word Search
A wet day indoors and out: raindrop and puddle, umbrella, raincoat and rain boots, the downpour and the drizzle, worms on the sidewalk, and inside a blanket fort, board games and a mug of cocoa.
The smell of rain on dry ground has a name. Two Australian scientists, Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas, called it petrichor in 1964, from the Greek words for stone and for the fluid in the veins of the gods. Part of it comes from oils that plants give off in dry weather, and part from geosmin, made by bacteria in the soil, which the human nose can pick up at a few parts per trillion.
Raindrops are not shaped like tears. Small ones are round, and larger ones flatten on the bottom as they fall, like a hamburger bun, until they break apart. The raincoat owes a lot to Charles Macintosh, a Scottish chemist who patented a waterproof cloth of rubber between two layers of fabric in 1823, and in Britain a raincoat is still called a mac.
