Kites Word Search

The parts and the physics of a kite: the spar, the sail, the bridle, the tail and the string on its spool, the lift and drag of the wind, and the shapes, from the diamond to the box kite and the Japanese rokkaku.

Kites were flying in China more than two thousand years ago, made of silk and bamboo, and armies used them for signals long before they were toys. In 1752 Benjamin Franklin flew one into a thunderstorm with a metal key tied to the wet string, to show that lightning is electricity. In 1893 the Australian Lawrence Hargrave built the first box kite, and the next year four of them lifted him off the ground.

The Wright brothers tested their idea for steering an airplane on a five-foot kite in 1899, four years before they flew. Today the city of Weifang in China calls itself the kite capital of the world and holds a kite festival each April, and in India the January festival of Uttarayan fills the sky with fighter kites whose strings are coated to cut a rival's line.
