Garden Word Search

This garden word search fills a shed with forty words: the trowel, rake, hoe and wheelbarrow, the compost and mulch that feed the soil, the trellis and greenhouse, and the ladybug and earthworm that do some of the work for free.

Charles Darwin's last book, published in 1881, was about earthworms. He spent decades measuring how fast they buried stones and old ruins, and showed that worms turn over the top layer of soil and leave it richer. Ladybugs eat aphids, the tiny sap-sucking insects that crowd onto new shoots, and gardeners buy ladybugs by the thousand to set loose on their roses.

The garden gnome comes from Germany, where potters began making clay gnomes in the 1800s. In 1847 Sir Charles Isham brought a set of them home to his garden at Lamport Hall in England. Only one survives, a small figure known as Lampy. During World War II, Americans dug millions of victory gardens in backyards, schoolyards and city lots, and by 1944 they were growing a large share of the country's fresh vegetables.
